What Does A Surgical Technologist Do?

Surgical technologists are vital members of the surgical team. They work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals in the operating room. Their responsibilities include: 

  • Preparing the operating room: Setting up sterile instruments, equipment, and supplies. 
  • Assisting the surgeon: Handing instruments, preparing the surgical site, and positioning the patient. 
  • Maintaining a sterile environment: Following strict infection control protocols to prevent the spread of infection. 
  • Providing patient care: Assisting with patient positioning, draping, and transferring. 
  • Maintaining equipment: Ensuring all equipment is functioning properly and in the correct location. 

This role requires a strong understanding of surgical procedures, anatomy, and physiology, as well as excellent communication and teamwork skills.

  • Explain how to prepare the surgical environment for specific surgical procedures. 
  • Explain selected surgical procedures, including the role of the surgical technologist. 
  • Discuss the medical laws and ethics related to surgical procedures and the surgical technologist position. 
  • Explain effective communication and patient care strategies used for various surgical patients, including those with special needs.

CERTIFICATION INFORMATION

Prospective students who wish to pursue the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) Tech in Surgery (TS-C) National Certification are required to:  

  • Complete an NCCT approved program.
  • Sit for and successfully pass the NCCT (TS-C) Certification – Surgical Technology Certification – National Center for Competency Testing
  • Achieve 125 scrubs over 2-year period. These 125 successful scrubs can be completed from employment on-the-job or through a clinical externship experience.
  • Candidates are required to complete a total of 125 cases, with a minimum of 90 as the 1st scrub. Case mix should include 30 to 50 general surgeries and 75 to 95 in at least three (3) different specialties.

Regardless of if you elect to pursue national certification or not, if you enroll and successfully complete this program, assuming you pass a background check and drug screen, you will have guaranteed access to our Ready to Work (RTW) Externship and Job Placement services. All students who successfully complete this program (and pass a background check and drug screen) will have guaranteed access to the RTW Externship or Job placement services at no additional cost.

National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) 

The Tech in Surgery – TS-C certification through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) validates your mastery of surgical technology principles, including sterile technique, instrument handling, patient safety, and adherence to industry best practices. 

Disclaimer: Washington requires Surgical Techs to be registered in the state. This is NOT a barrier, but students should be aware that they are responsible for any fees and submissions due to the state.
